MeccaUSA - Puerto Rican Day Parade
2000-Jun-11
Limited edition t-shirts were created for the Puerto Rican day parade inspired by the current protests against the military presence of the U.S. Navy on the island of Vieques. Vieques is a small island off the east coast of Puerto Rico with a population of over 9,000 inhabitants. For sixty years it has also been the site of extensive military exercises-shelling, bombing, and submarine warfare. The small island, taken over in exchange for small monetary sums, has been used to train U.S. forces since World War II. A high rate of cancer, a stunted economy and the endangerment of various species of fish and coral, are just a few results of the U.S. Navy's presence in Vieques. Over a year ago, a civilian security guard was killed by an errant Navy bomb. Since then, live-fire practice has been suspended. However, efforts by the American government to resume exercises using mock bombs and live ammunition are being negotiated for the near future.
During this year¡¯s national PR parade, Mecca USA along with LatinFlava.com will join in the call for the ceasing of military exercises on Vieques. Proceeds from the sales of these T-shirts will be donated to "Vieques Freedom Concert" being held in NYC this summer.
